Philly Cheesesteak Sliders have to be one of the best party foods; they’re a great game day recipe when you need to feed a larger crowd, but they also serve to be a great go-to dinner during the week when you need something easy, delicious, and ready in under 45 minutes. Philly Cheesesteak Sliders are loaded with thinly sliced steak, a combination of peppers and onions, then topped off with some good ol’ melted Cheez Wiz cheese spread. Not a Cheez Wiz fan? Swap it for some melted provolone, and I promise you will make this recipe time and time again.

WHO INVENTED THE PHILLY CHEESESTEAK?

The original cheesesteak was credited to Pat and Harry Olivieri, two brothers who ran a hot dog stand near South Philadelphia’s Italian Market. Legend has it that in the 1930s, the brothers wanted to offer new sandwich options, which ended up being grilled beef and onions in a toasted roll; which is how the cheesesteak was invented. Well, this is what google told me anyways.

TOP QUESTIONS ANSWERED:

What is the best cut of beef for cheesesteaks?

I recommend using a beef that doesn’t require a ton of time to tenderize. The traditional Philly Cheesesteak is made using ribeye, but either sirloin or ribeye works well in this recipe.

What is the best cheez wiz alternative?

If you aren’t a fan of cheez wiz (can’t relate), you can go down the more traditional route and add a few pieces of provolone cheese. I do this from time to time, and it’s delicious, so you can’t go wrong either way.

A FEW TIPS BEFORE GETTING STARTED:

  • Pop the steak in the freezer for 30 minutes before slicing it. This will help harden the steak, making it much easier to cut into thin slices.
  • Let the steak marinade for 15-20 minutes if you can to allow those flavours to really sink into the beef.
  • Add your steak as the first layer of your sliders, rather than your cheez wiz. The cheez wiz can soak into the bread too quickly which can make these a bit soggy, so my recommendation is to drizzle on the cheese spread at the very end.
  • Don’t skip out on the melted butter! It adds such a delicious flavour to these sliders, and creates the most beautiful golden colour and crisp to the buns.

STORING & REHEATING INSTRUCTIONS:

Storing: if you have leftovers, add them to an airtight container and keep refrigerated for up to 2 days.

Oven: to re-heat, simply add your leftover Philly Cheesesteak Sliders to a baking dish, cover with foil, and bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes at 350 degrees.

Microwave: you can add the leftover sliders to the microwave and heat for 30-45 seconds.
