Are you looking for a simple, zesty and bright lemon Vinaigrette? Make this just once, and you’ll never buy store bought salad dressing again!

vinaigrette

My dad has been making this vinaigrette for years! In fact, we named it the: Barone House Salad Dressing because we rarely switch it up. It’s zesty, bright, flavourful and will blow any store bought version out of the water. Yes it adds a delicious flavour to greens, but it also works as a chicken, shrimp or vegetable marinade.

Ingredients

Here is a quick overview of the ingredients you’ll need to make my Vinaigrette. For the exact detailed measurements and ingredients, scroll to the bottom of this page to review my recipe card.

  • Olive oil: try to use a high quality olive oil for the best results.
  • Lemon juice: makes it zesty and bright.
  • White vinegar: adds more acid to help balance the flavours.
  • Sugar: adds the perfect sweetness.
  • Salt: adds flavour.
  • Dry mustard: adds a delicious depth of flavour.
  • Onion salt: adds flavour.
  • Paprika: gives the dressing a subtle smokiness and adds to the colour.
  • Oregano: adds an aromatic flavour.
  • Dried thyme: adds an aromatic flavour.
  • Garlic: gives it a nice kick!

What is vinaigrette?

Vinaigrette is a combination of oil (typically olive oil) and an acid such as vinegar or lemon juice. The mixture can be enhanced with salt, garlic and other spices. Vinaigrette is most commonly used to dress salads, but also works as a marinade.

What is the different between a vinaigrette and a dressing?

Dressings are typically thicker and creamier with the additional of mayonnaise, mustard or honey. Vinaigrettes typically stick to oil, vinegar, and spices.

Homemade Vinaigrette

By Sammy Montgoms
Say goodbye to store bought salad dressings and make this simple, zesty, lemon vinaigrette with ingredients you likely have on hand. Use in salads or as a marinade for chicken, shrimp, or vegetables.
Prep: 5 minutes
Servings: 6 people

Ingredients

  • 1 cup olive oil, extra virgin
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp dry mustard
  • 1/2 tsp onion salt
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/8 tsp dried thyme

Instructions

  • In a liquid measuring cup or bowl, combine all of the ingredients.
  • Whisk until the ingredients are well combined.
  • Use immediately, or cover and refrigerate for future use.
Sammy's notes: homemade vinaigrette keeps well for about 7 days in the fridge. If your vinaigrette solidifies in the fridge, let come to room temperature before serving. This is totally normal, real olive oil does that!
  • Enjoy!

Will try soon but I have no doubt it will be awesome. I have made your meatballs and they were fantastic! Love following you! Many thanks!🙏

  3. This looks so good! Quick question- I am not a fan of mustard. If I omit the dry mustard, will it still taste good, or do you really need that element? Thanks!
