This is my easy Sticky Beef & Broccoli and it is so delicious, I can honestly drink this sauce! I love a good take- out beef and broccoli but making it at home is honestly so easy and it’s ready in about 20 minutes start to finish. During the week when my kids are playing sports until 7 o’clock at night and I need to get something quick and delicious on the dinner table, this is one of the dishes I always turn to.

This sauce is loaded with such flavourful ingredients that you likely have in your pantry already such as: soy sauce, honey, sesame oil, olive oil, brown sugar, chilli flakes and more.

I used to make this recipe all of the time when I was working in my office downtown and I needed to bring a lunch every day. It’s such a great recipe for lunch meal prep, so if that’s your jam, you can easily double this recipe!

Substitutions & FAQ’s

Can I substitute the beef for another meat?
You can definitely substitute the beef in this recipe for any type of meat that you want. I’ve personally made this recipe using tofu and chicken and it’s absolutely delicious.

What does the cornstarch in this recipe do?
Cornstarch is used as a thickening agent!

What happens if my sauce is not as thick as I want it to be?
If your sauce is not as thick as you want it to be you can make what is called a cornstarch slurry. Take 1 teaspoon of cornstarch and 1 teaspoon of water and mix the two really well. Once combined you can add this slurry to your pan, mix it all together with the rest of your ingredients and it will begin to thicken your sauce.

What should I serve with my sticky beef & broccoli?
Depending on my mood I will serve this with jasmine rice or a large leafy green salad.

Do I need to use a cast iron pan to make this recipe?
You don’t need to use a cast iron pan for this recipe, although if you have one I do recommend using it. Using a cast iron pan will give the beef such a nice crispiness on the outside and an even tenderness to the inside.

Can I add the broccoli at the same time as the beef?
You can do this, but the reason I like to steam the broccoli before frying the beef is to really control how long I cook the broccoli for. I find it if you cook the beef and broccoli at the same time the broccoli becomes really over cooked. So, my preference is to steam it for about two minutes, take it out of the pan, and then add it during the last minute or two of cooking.

Filling & satisfying: This dish has it all! It’s comforting, loaded with flavour and has everything you can want in a super quick and easy dinner.
You only need a few ingredients: I love making this dish because it only requires a few simple ingredients, most of which I usually have in my pantry at any given time!
Makes for great leftovers or meal prep: This one is such a good meal prep recipe. Feel free to double this recipe and serve it along side some rice or quinoa if you’re looking at making a few healthy lunches for the week.

Sticky Beef & Broccoli

This is my one pan Sticky Beef & Broccoli that has the most delicious sauce you could probably drink! It comes together so quickly making it the perfect addition to any busy week-night dinner. Hope you love this one as much as my family does!
Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: 10 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

Beef Marinade:

  • 1 lb flank or skirt steak, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil, for frying the beef
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce, low sodium
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

Sauce:

  • 1/3 cup soy sauce, low sodium
  • 1 tbsp shaoxing wine
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp chilli oil or hot sauce of choice
  • 3 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 3 garlic cloves, chopped fine
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, chopped fine
  • 1/2 tsp chilli flakes

Broccoli:

  • 3 cups broccoli, chopped
  • 2 cups water, for steaming
  • sesame seeds, optional for topping

Instructions

  • Begin by slicing your steak into bite sized pieces and add all of your beef marinade ingredients into a medium sized bowl. Mix well, and set aside while you prepare your sauce.
*Don't add the olive oil, this is for frying.
  • Combine all of your sauce ingredients in a small bowl and mix well.
  • To a large frying pan add your chopped broccoli and water. Cover and let steam on medium heat for 2-4 minutes.
*I don't like my broccoli very cooked so I only steam it for about two minutes.
  • Take the broccoli out of the frying pan and set it aside. Remove the water from the frying pan and dry it completely.
  • Add your olive oil to the pan and set to medium high heat. Fry your beef on each side for one to two minutes, just until it begins to brown.
  • Add your sauce to the beef and give it a good mix. Simmer for 3-5 minutes allowing the sauce to thicken.
  • Add your broccoli and give it one last mix.
  • Top with sesame seeds and enjoy right away!
