Hot Honey Chicken Cutlets are a spin on the traditional chicken cutlet. This version follows the classic steps by generously coating with seasoned breadcrumbs and frying until perfectly crispy and golden. These Hot Honey Chicken Cutlets are flavourful, crispy, and finished with a drinkable hot honey sauce that is made using only two ingredients: honey, and hot sauce. Once you make these, you won’t ever stop!

I grew up on my moms chicken cutlets, they are such a classic, and one of my all time favourite foods. They pair perfectly with salad, pasta, in between two pieces of bread, and I won’t lie, sometimes I eat them cold right out the fridge. I also love making chicken cutlets when I’m hosting because I prepare them in advance, and fry them about 30 minutes before my guests arrive. My hot honey version is a delicious way to spice up the classic chicken cutlet recipe.

What is a Chicken Cutlet?

A chicken cutlet is a piece of chicken breast that has been cut in half to make two thinner pieces. Typically, the cutlet is then pounded out with a meat mallet to make it even thinner so that the chicken cooks faster, more evenly, which will result in a super crispy, golden chicken cutlet.

5 steps to make Hot Honey Chicken Cutlets

  1. Prepare your chicken by slicing each breast down the middle. Using a meat mallet, pound out the chicken breasts to be about 1/2 inch thick.
  2. Prepare your dreading station by grabbing 2 separate bowls: one with the breadcrumb mixture and the other with the egg mixture.
  3. Add your chicken to the egg mixture, then directly into the breadcrumb mixture.
  4. Fry your cutlets on each side until golden and crispy.
  5. Prepare your hot honey sauce by combing the honey and hot sauce.

Hot Honey Chicken Cutlets

Hot Honey Chicken Cutlets are a spin on the traditional chicken cutlet recipe. They are fried until golden and crispy and finished with a drinkable hot honey sauce that is made using only two ingredients: honey, and hot sauce. Once you make these, you won't ever stop!
Prep: 20 minutes
Cook: 10 minutes
Servings: 4 people

Ingredients

Chicken:

  • 8 large chicken breasts, sliced in half to make 8 pieces total
  • salt
  • pepper
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder

Egg Mixture:

  • 2 eggs, whisked
  • 1 tbsp Franks buffalo hot sauce, or hot sauce of choice
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

Breadcrumbs:

  • 1 cup Italian breadcrumbs, seasoned
  • 1/2 cup parmigiano reggiano , grated
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

Hot Honey:

  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup Franks buffalo hot sauce, or hot sauce of choice

Everything Else:

  • cup peanut oil, for frying the chicken cutlets
  • fresh parsley, to garnish, optional

Instructions

  • Begin by slicing the chicken breasts in half.
Add a piece of parchment paper or plastic wrap onto your cutting board, add a chicken breast, and then cover with another piece of parchment paper or plastic wrap.
Using a meat mallet, pound out the chicken breasts to be about 1/2 inch thick.
Repeat with the remaining chicken breasts.
  • Generously season your chicken breasts on both sides with salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder.
  • To a medium size bowl add all of the egg mixture ingredients, and whisk well.
Set aside until ready to use.
  • To a separate medium size bowl add all of the breadcrumb ingredients and mix to combine.
  • Add one piece of chicken at a time to the egg mixture, coat on both sides and let the excess drip off.
  • Add the chicken to the breadcrumbs and firmly press down to coat the chicken on both sides.
Repeat until all chicken has been coated.
  • To a large frying pan, add the peanut oil and set to medium/high heat.
Sammy's Tip: you'll know the oil is hot enough to fry if you add the tip of a wooden spoon in the oil and it begins to form small bubbles.
  • Add the chicken breasts to the hot oil (working in batches if you need to not overcrowd the pan) and fry on each side for approximately 3 minutes, or until golden and crispy.
  • Once cooked, add the chicken to a wire rack and let cool slightly while you prepare the hot honey sauce.
  • To a small saucepan, add the hot honey ingredients and simmer for 1 minute.
  • Pour the hot honey sauce over the chicken cutlets, garnish with fresh parsley and enjoy right away.
