My 20 minute dinner series continues, and day 3 might be one of my favourites in the entire series, with my super simple Beef & Broccoli. A quintessential Chinese-American recipe, Beef & Broccoli is an incredibly popular dish, and for good reason. It’s loaded with tender pieces of beef, crunchy broccoli, and a drinkable garlicky soy glaze.

During the week when my kids are out doing activities until 7pm, and I need to get something quick and delicious on the dinner table, this is one of the recipes I always turn to. The sauce is loaded with such flavourful ingredients that you likely have on hand such as: soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger.

I used to make this recipe all the time when I was working at my office downtown and I needed to bring a lunch every day. It’s a great recipe for meal prep, so if that’s your jam, you can easily double this recipe and take it for a healthy lunch.

What cut of beef should I use in this recipe?

  • Flank steak (my preference): budget friendly, thin and flat.
  • Skirt steak: similar to the flank cut, but typically contains more fat, budget friendly, thin and flat.
  • Top sirloin: tender, with great flavour.

Reasons why you’ll love this recipe

Ready in under 20 minutes: I love making this recipe because it comes together in under 20 minutes, so it’s perfect for a busy week-night dinner.
Filling & satisfying: This dish has it all! It’s comforting, loaded with flavour and has everything you can want in a super quick and easy dinner.
You only need a few ingredients: I love making this dish because it only requires a few simple ingredients, most of which you likely have in your pantry.
Makes for great leftovers or meal prep: This one is such a good meal prep recipe. Feel free to double this recipe and serve it along side some rice or quinoa if you’re looking to meal prep for the week.

Ingredients

Here is a quick overview of the ingredients you’ll need to make my Beef & Broccoli. For the exact detailed measurements and ingredients, scroll to the bottom of this page to review my recipe card.

  • flank steak
  • broccoli florets
  • garlic cloves
  • fresh ginger
  • oyster sauce
  • soy sauce
  • baking soda
  • chicken broth
  • shaoxing wine
  • sesame oil
  • brown sugar
  • sugar
  • cornstarch

My tips before getting started

  1. Get your pan hot before cooking your beef. This will ensure a sear on the beef which helps to lock in all of those delicious flavours.
  2. If you have the time, let the beef marinade for 20-30 minutes.
  3. Serve this on top of white rice for the ultimate comfort dinner.

Storing & reheating

Have leftovers? Lucky you. Store them in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
To reheat your Beef & Broccoli, simply microwave for 30-45 seconds or heat in a small saucepan on the stove for 2-3 minutes, or until heated throughout.

Amazingly delicious. I added an extra clove of garlic, because garlic! On point and quick.
Have to admit thought the flank would be tough but it was perfect!
