😍 Why You’ll Love This Whipped Cottage Cheese Dip

High protein: The cottage cheese and Greek yogurt sneak in added protein.
Silky smooth texture: Blending transforms cottage cheese into an unbelievably creamy dip.
Deep caramelized flavour: Those low-and-slow onions add natural sweetness and richness.
Perfect for entertaining: It’s easy to make ahead and always a crowd favourite.

🧀 Ingredients To Make This Cottage Cheese Dip Recipe

Cottage cheese: Once blended, it turns completely smooth and creamy, creating a high-protein base that is rich without being too heavy.
Greek yogurt: Adds a subtle tang while helping create that perfectly whipped texture. It also keeps the dip light and balanced.
Mayonnaise: Just a couple of spoonfuls deepen the flavour and give you that classic onion dip richness and texture.
Butter or olive oil: Used to slowly caramelize the onions. Butter adds extra richness, while olive oil keeps it slightly lighter.

Sweet white onions: Cooked low and slow, they become golden, jammy, and naturally sweet.
Worcestershire sauce: Adds depth and umami that makes the dip taste fuller and more complex.
Balsamic glaze: A small drizzle enhances the sweetness of the onions and adds depth.
Garlic powder: Brings gentle warmth without overpowering the caramelized flavour.
Onion powder: Reinforces that classic onion dip taste and layers the flavour.
Dried thyme: Adds an earthy, slightly herbal note that balances the richness.
Smoked paprika: A touch of smokiness that gives the dip warmth and depth.
Black pepper: Adds mild heat and sharpness to round everything out.
Salt: Essential for balancing the sweetness of the onions and tying all the flavours together.

✔ How To Make This Whipped Cottage Cheese Dip Recipe

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and bring to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low and cook, stirring occasionally, for 35–45 minutes, or until the onions are deeply golden brown and sweetly caramelized.

Once the onions are nearly finished, season lightly with salt and pepper. Set onions aside to cool while you prepare everything else.

Add the cottage cheese to a small blender (or use an immersion blender) and blend until smooth, about 2 minutes. Transfer the creamy cottage cheese to a serving bowl.

🤝 Sammy’s Tips for Perfectly Caramelized Onions

  • Be patient. Low and slow is key. If you rush them, they’ll burn instead of caramelize.
  • Stir occasionally. Every few minutes is enough. Too much stirring prevents proper browning.
  • Use a wide pan. More surface area helps the onions cook evenly and develop better colour.
  • Deglaze if needed. If they start sticking or browning too quickly, add a splash of water, broth, or wine to lift the flavourful bits from the pan.
  • Adjust the heat as needed. If they’re browning too fast, lower the heat. If they haven’t started colouring after about 20 minutes, gently increase it.

Whisk the Greek yogurt and mayonnaise into the blended cottage cheese until fully combined and smooth. Add the worcestershire sauce, balsamic glaze, garlic powder, onion powder, dried thyme, smoked paprika, black pepper and salt. Mix until combined.

Add the caramelized onions and mix until everything is incorporated well. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Enjoy with tortilla chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables.

🗒 Variations

Extra oniony: Stir in a tablespoon of finely chopped fresh chives or green onions right before serving for added brightness and texture.
Smokier: Increase the smoked paprika slightly.

🗒 Substitutions

Cottage cheese: Full-fat gives the creamiest result, but low-fat works if that’s what you have. Just blend thoroughly for the smoothest texture.
Greek yogurt: You can replace it with sour cream for a more classic onion dip flavour.
Mayonnaise: Swap with extra Greek yogurt if you prefer a lighter version.
Worcestershire sauce: Soy sauce or tamari works in a pinch for that same savoury depth.
Sweet white onions: Yellow onions caramelize great as well and make a good substitute.

🤔 FAQ’S

Definitely! Making it a few hours ahead allows the flavours to meld together.

Can I skip blending the cottage cheese?

You can, but the texture will be a lot less smooth. For that classic whipped cottage cheese dip texture, blending is key.

Can I freeze this dip?

I don’t recommend freezing. The texture may separate once thawed.

How long does this whipped cottage cheese dip last in the fridge?

Stored in an airtight container, it will keep for up to 4 days in the refrigerator.

What type of cottage cheese works best?

Full-fat cottage cheese gives you the richest, creamiest result. Low-fat works too, but it isn’t preferred. ust make sure it’s plain and not flavoured.
