Equipment

  • 1 Large frying pan

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil to fry the beef
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp hot sauce or chili crunch
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 4 garlic cloves minced
  • 2 tbsp fresh ginger grated
  • fresh chives to garnish, optional
  • sesame seeds to garnish, optional

Instructions

  • Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and break it into pieces. Cook until fully cooked and browned, allowing it to sit undisturbed between stirring to develop crisp edges. Drain excess fat as needed.
Sammy's tip: to remove small amounts of excess fat, carefully blot with a paper towel held in tongs. Removing excess fat helps the beef brown and crisp.
  • Meanwhile, mince the garlic and the fresh ginger. Set aside.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the low-sodium soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, cornstarch, hot sauce, brown sugar, honey, and sesame oil until smooth and no cornstarch clumps remain.
  • Once the beef is browned, drain any remaining excess fat and reduce the heat to medium-low. Add the garlic and ginger and sauté for 1–2 minutes, stirring frequently, until fragrant.
  • Whisk the sauce again, then pour it over the beef. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring, until the sauce thickens and evenly coats the beef.
  • Serve immediately over rice or alongside potatoes. Garnish with fresh chives and sesame seeds, as desired.
